Maria Pia admits government payout

June 8, 1908

The Dowager Queen Maria Pia of Portugal has admitted to receiving $40,000 from the State, according to a report by the Associated Press. A commission, "which has been investigating the finances of the late King Carlo's reign," has discovered that Queen Maria Pia received $40,000 from the government.
The Queen Dowager "does not deny that she received this money," but she said she "was justified in using it" as her yearly allowance of $2400 "was not sufficient to maintain her in royal state."
The Portuguese government "is greatly embarrassed by the discovery."
