Political issues with choice of godparents for new Prussian princess

October 15, 1892

Kaiser Wilhelm II has asked Queen Regent Maria Cristina of Spain to be a godmother to his infant daughter, reports the New York Times.  The Queen has consented, according to a Spanish newspaper, El Globo, which notes that Maria Cristina's acceptance is "calculated to create coldness with France, and will prove prejudicial to the conclusion of a projected treaty" between France and Spain.

Empress Auguste Viktoria gave birth to a princess on September 13.  The infant princess will be baptised on October 22.
