The Oldenburgs

Again dipping into my postcard collection








Duke Friedrich August I of Oldenburg (1842-1931) was married twice.  He married Princess Elisabeth Anna of Prussia on February 28, 1878.  A year later, Elisabeth gave birth to a daughter, Sophie Charlotte, who married Prince Eitel Friedrich of Prussia, a younger son of German Emperor Wilhelm II.  A second daughter, Margarete died at the age of 4 months in February 1882.

Elisabeth-Anna died in August 1895.  Just over a year later, on October 24, 1896, Frriedrich August married for a second time.  His new wife was Duchess Elisabeth of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

They had five children: Nikolaus (1897-1970);  Friedrich August and Alexandrine (twins who lived for only a day in March 1900), Ingeborg Alix (1901-1996), the wife of Prince Stephan of Schaumburg-Lippe, and Altburg, who married Prince Josias of Waldeck und Pyrmont.

Nikolaus married Princess Helene of Waldeck und Pyrmont, the sister of Prince Joasias.  They had nine children, Anton-Gunther (present head of the Oldenburg family), Rixa, Peter, Eilika (Dowager Princess of Leiningen), Eigilmar, Friedrich August. Altburg. Huno and Johann.)

Duchess Altburg and Prince Josias's only son, Wittekind, is the current head of the Waldeck und Pyrmont family.
